Deal Surf T-Day Bass!! 11/25/10

It was a beautiful morning at the Deal surf today. I met Tony Green and his son Ben at around 6:00am in Deal on this fine Thanksgiving morning.

We worked the stretch with an assortment of lures, needlefish, Yozuri crystal minnows and sand eel imitations with teasers.

Ben caught his Thanksgiving Striper on a Yozuri crystal minnow (black and silver) while it was still dark. It was a nice fat 21 incher.

Congratulations Ben! Great job as no other fish were caught in the area that I coud see.

I did not see any bait or fish in the wash. Very quite with the exception of Ben's bass. We will try again tomorrow.

Deal Surf Report 11/24

Fished a little south of my usual spot in Deal fron 6:00-7:30am or so. Used a Yellow and white bomber and then a Yozuri crystal minnow in green and yellow.
I fished from the surf.. I did see sand eels in the wash. They were being chased by sand dabs as it got light.
Birds were working off the jetties as I left. No hits no errors......
Nice to meet you Marty!! Good takling to you!
Hope to get one on T Day tomorrow..

Deal Surf "Casino" Jackpot!!!!Report 11/20

I fished the Deal surf today from 6-7:30am. I was hesitant to go because of the SW wind but I went anyway because I was up and Tony and Ben said they might be going as well.
I worked the stretch from Roosevelt Jetty down to the Casino. After slinging metal for an hour or so I decided to try a Yellow A-Salt Bomber and I nailed a 30 incher right in the wash in front of the Deal Casino around 7:30am.
It was nice to get a keeper and it made my day. Now I can make a nice batch of Striper chowder and and pan seared Striper fillet with taragon butter.

Opening Day Blackfish Report 11/16/10 "Golden Touch".

Fished on the Golden Touch with Howie, Billy, Eric, Brian Jon, Frankie and Capt. John Cole today for Blackfish.
We had a great day and limited out for the charter. I had my best day ever blackfishing with my limit plus and some of action on shorts. I also had a "pig" that broke me off. Fish up to around 8 pounds were caught. Billy had the big one.
It was great fishing with you guys.. Capt. Cole and Frankie are top notch as far as I am concerned. Great breakfast served, on the fish all day and nice boat to be on.
Everyone caught fish and went home with bags of fillets..A good time was had by all and the weather held out for us and the other Blackfish openers...

Thanks again Howie, Capt. Cole for a great day out, lots of fish great food and a great time. ..

Sea Tiger II Porgy Report. Great fishing!!

I headed out Saturday with good friend Bill and son Leif on the Sea Tiger II 1/2 day afternoon Porgy trip. Haven't been out on an actual Porgy trip in about 20 years so I was looking forward to it since the fishing has been so good this year. Last trip was the Jamaica II in 1990.

Anyway it was a great afternoon out. Leif fished ultra light and used the rigs we tied the day before, 2 and 3 hook rigs on 20lb triplefish with Gamakatsu hooks. They sure did the trick. Bill had suggested that those little sharp hooks would be the key and he was right. Bill and I fished the same rigs on conventional outfits.

We wound up with 40 Porgies in the cooler and had a great time. There were a few other species caught including some Blackfish and keeper size Sea Bass that were released.

The Sea Tiger was a great boat and Bill informed me that it was the old Big Marie S. The crew was great and it was a pleasure fishing on that Party Boat.

As always, it was great getting out with my son and Bill and we look forward to some great Porgy dinners. (Recipes to follow)

Sea Devil Tuna Report 10/10-10/11

I headed out on the Sea Devil for Tuna Sunday night with my son Leif and friend Adam. We had fun and it was good to get out for tuna once again. Pretty slow fishing but 9 tuna were landed (50-70lbs) and I had one of them. It was a 50lb Longfin I caught on a PB&J Jig on the new Calstar I built.

Leif (who jigged 6 last year) was a little disapointed that he did not get a repeat of last years trip but it was nice to have him along and he had fun catching all those squid for bait.
Thanks to Capt. Bob and Mates Mike, Mike and Chris. Mike....you got lucky with that "I only need one gaff Bob" HAHAHA. Thanks for all your help and Taking care of my boy. Thanks Capt. Bob for staying a little longer for the day bite.
Thanks also to the angler who donated one of his fish as everyone had the chance to take some steaks home.

Deal Surf Report 10/8 Fly Rod Bass!!

Deal Surf Report 10/8 Fly Rod Bass!!

Well it was another beautiful morning at the Deal surf today.
I fly fished with my friend Adam today in Deal from 6:15am to 7:45am. We hit the surf and started throwing White snake flies. Adam quickly switched over to a Chartreuse Half and Half (pictured) since he had no hits on the snake fly.
Shortly after he hooked and landed a 26 incher on that fly. I stuck with the snake fly and got "skunked"
We did see a lot of life today. Upon our arrival we saw a Black Bellied Plover, a Peregrine Falcon capturing a bird only to lose it to a persistent Gull.(Adam is an avid birder and alerted me to the event).
We also saw lots of bait in the wash and many pods of Bottle nose dolphins that were jumping and milling not too far from shore.

Leif and Bill's "Paramount Ling Adventure"

I headed out on the Paramount Wednesday on the 6:30am-3:30pm with Bill Malcolm of Midland Park for the deep water ling special. Bill was off and it didn't take much to convince me. (Just the wife)

It was about a two hour ride to the spot in flat seas.
We started nailing them right away using the "Glow Squid" High Low triple hook rig. Double headers and big fat ling to boot.
Not too far in the trip I dropped my custom 7ft bottom rod I build along with the Penn accurate conversion. Don't ask me what happened.... just slippery hands and a little arm spasm and down it goes to Davey Jones and the ling Gods.
We combined for 35big ling between us for the day. It was a full boat and appeared that most anglers had some fish. No dogfish and a few ocean pout were caught but the current was strong and that made it difficult to anchor and remain on the fish at times.

Gambler 7/24 Flying Fluke and Sea Bass!

Saturday Leif and I went fishing on the Gambler with Ben Green and his dad Tony Green. It was the half day Fluke Sea Bass trip from 8-12:30.

As expected, we had a good time. The boys fished for an hour before the boat left and caught 3-4 Fluke each. one was 17 1/2 inches. (See flying Fluke photo) FIRST PHOTO.....NOT A PHOTO SHOP!!!
It was hot but as Capt. Bob alternated drifts, we enjoyed the "Shady side" when it came our turn. A little to hot for this Norseman....

In any event we wound up with a decent catch. I guess in total we caught about 20 fish between the 4 of us and had 4 keeper seabass and 3 keeper Fluke up to 21 inches. Ben just missed the pool with his personal best 21incher. We were bucktailing most of the time but a few fish were caught dragging bait.
Leif did a really nice job filleting the fish. Nice to have him take care of the fish now.

Deal surf 7/4 night surf report

Deal surf 7/4 night surf report

Fished the Deal surf on the Fourth of July with son Leif and Bill Malcolm. We fished from 8-12pm and soaked worms, soft crabs and clams.
We saw the fireworks, and caught lots of smooth dogfish, spider crabs and a few species of skate.
None of the desirable species but as usual, many laughs and a relaxing time on the sand.
