Mackerel and Codfishing Update 1/12/10

The Mackerel fishing continues to show sign of improvement. Capt. Jimmy of the Miss Belmar Princess , Belmar NJ reported good fishing 18 miles to the east. He was on the fish for an hour and a half and anglers had a chance to put some in the cooler. Unfortunately the action slowed up as the wind increased. I stopped by the boat on the way home from work and saw that Jimmy and his crew had jigged a large barrel between them. Mike, Jimmys first mate was nice enough to give me 30 or so for the table.
Don't wait too long to get out.

Codfishing is improving off Montauk as anglers over the past few days are catching fish in the 10-12lb range with some limits.

Local codfishing off NJ hasn't been bad either with some nice cod and pollock caught up to 40 lbs. Large ling have been caught as well on these 20-40 mile wreck trips. The Voyager, Gambler, and Jamaica are all running these trips.
